Switch System On Click Relay Blink Off (flicker)

Switch System On Click Relay Blink Off (flicker) (2018) for saxophone quartet is a system of shifting power structures. Performers’ presence within the ensemble, control over musical material, and autonomy of decision-making evolves over time. At various points, performers may be offered opportunities to alter the power structure and the interactive dynamics between members of the ensemble. These opportunities, however, are controlled by an invisible system, which is made visible through the use of computer-controlled lights. The state of the lightbulbs represents the state of the system that dictates shifts in the ensemble’s power structure. In this way, the lightbulbs cue change, represent compositional form, and control the actions of the performers.

The lights are controlled by my own custom relay system that interfaces with Max/MSP via arduino.
